About Your Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure to increase the size of the breasts by introducing a synthetic implant. They may also be used to correct asymmetrical breasts. The implant may be placed behind the mammary gland or behind the pectoral muscle supporting the mammary gland. Breast implants are available in three different styles: saline, silicone gel and cohesive gel.
Indications
Women normally chose to have one of two types of breast implant surgery, i.e. cosmetic breast augmentation, or breast reconstruction because of birth deformity or the removal of a cancerous breast.
Procedure
Surgery may be carried out under general, local or neuroleptic anesthesia. The incision to insert the implant may be made in the crease under the breast, the axilla (armpit) or the lower border of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). The surgeon will explain the positive and negative aspects of each technique. The surgeon prepares a pocket either behind the mammary gland or behind the pectoral muscle and inserts the implant. The incision is then closed and a dressing is applied.
After Surgery
Your surgeon will prescribe medication to relieve post-operative pain. In the days following surgery, you may gradually resume regular activities within moderation. Instructions for post-operative care vary with individual surgeons and the type of implant. In some cases, patients will be advised to massage their breasts several times per day or to wear a tight bra. Your surgeon will provide you with post-operative instructions.
Important Notes:
- Your surgery will take approximately one to two hours.
- Expect a recovery period of approximately two weeks.
