About Your Eyelid or Blepharoplasty Procedure

The aim of blepharoplasty is to correct heavy, wrinkled or baggy eyelids, and to restore a fresher, more youthful appearance to the eyes.

Indications
Baggy eyelids are caused by the protrusion of the normal fat pads around the eyes. This problem may be encountered by those of a comparatively young age if it is a familiar trait or Asian cultures. The skin folds may be heavy enough to cause partial obstruction of vision. Generally speaking, the results of blepharoplasty are permanent.

Procedure
Blepharoplasty can be done under local or general anesthesia. Surgery will last from one to two hours. The surgeon measures the amount of skin to be removed from the eyelids. On the upper lid the incision is made along the normal folds of the lid and the excess skin is removed. A small amount of fat may also be removed. On the lower lid the incision is made just under the eyelashes. A small amount of skin and fat are removed.

After Surgery
Rest is recommended for the first few days following surgery. It is best to sleep in a semi- reclined position which will prevent swelling. Your surgeon may recommend that cold compresses be applied to the eyes. Swelling and bruising will vary from person to person and will generally disappear within two weeks. Yoursurgeon will provide post-operative instructions.

Important Notes:

  • Your surgery will take between one to two hours.
  • Expect a recovery period of 14 days.
  • Please arrange to have someone pick you up from our surgical centre following surgery.
  • Remember to sleep in a semi-reclined position.
