About Your Facelift Procedure

Face lift surgery is a procedure aimed at rejuvenating the aging face.

Indications
Many factors play a role in the aging of the facial skin. These include environmental exposure (sun, wind), the type of skin (elasticity, tightness), complexion, weight alterations, nutrition, smoking and menopause.

Procedure
The operation consists of removing excess skin and fatty tissue and correcting the sagging of specific facial muscles. Face lifts are usually done under general anesthesia. An incision is made starting at the temple and follows the natural skin crease in front of the ear, then behind the earlobe and finally backwards along the hair line or into the scalp. An additional incision may be made under the chin. The skin of the face is then undermined in a forward direction and lifted off the deep tissues. It is then redraped and excess skin is removed.

After Surgery
Your surgeon will prescribe the necessary medication to relieve post-operative pain. Swelling and bruising are normal and will disappear during the first two to three weeks. Avoid vigorous activity, bending your head, sleeping on a flat surface, emotional upsets and alcohol. A feeling of tightness may be experienced and will gradually subside over the first few weeks. Sleeping in a semi-sitting position and applying cold compresses to the face will speed recovery.

If there are stitches they will be removed after a few days. Your face will remain sensitive to cold and direct sunlight for several months. The skin will progressively regain its normal suppleness and sensitivity during the first few months. Scars above and behind the ears may widen during the first few months. Please refer to your surgeon’s post-operative instructions.

Important Notes:

  • Your surgery may take between two to four hours.
  • Aesthetically you will see a full recovery in approximately six weeks.
  • Please arrange to have someone pick you up from our surgical centre following surgery.
  • Avoid strenuous activities and sleeping in a flat position.
